About the position

Applicants are invited to indicate their preferred title in the application (e.g., Assistant Professor, Associate Professor (Dotsent), or Professor — or equivalent). The final position level will be confirmed by the University's Selection Committee based on the assessment of the candidate's qualifications, publications, and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Teaching courses in industrial safety, life safety, risk management at hazardous production facilities, occupational health and industrial safety management systems, and digital HSE tools at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Developing and regularly updating course syllabi and instructional materials in line with the program's learning objectives and outcomes, and the requirements of state educational standards, national and sectoral qualifications frameworks, and international HSE standards.
  • Updating course content to reflect current approaches: Risk Assessment (HAZOP, FMEA, Bow-Tie, LOPA, etc.), ISO 45001, Process Safety Management (API RP 750), digital safety monitoring (Digital HSE), Safety Analytics, ESG in industrial safety, and Industrial Cybersecurity.
  • Supervising coursework, thesis, and master's research on industrial safety, risk management, digital HSE, incident analysis, and improving the resilience of industrial facilities.
  • Participating in the university's research and applied projects and collaborating with industrial enterprises, oil and gas and mining companies, the energy sector, chemical and processing industries, as well as supervisory authorities and civil protection and emergency services.

Education Requirements

  • Possession of a PhD degree or an equivalent degree in industrial safety, life safety, occupational health, technosphere safety, oil and gas/mining/chemical engineering, or related engineering fields where industrial safety is the core area.
  • Candidates from adjacent fields may be considered if their dissertation topic, publications, courses taught, and professional experience relate to industrial safety, HSE systems, risk management, ISO 45001, Process Safety Management, or digital HSE systems.
  • Ability to translate these competencies into high-quality teaching and student supervision at all levels of higher education

Experience Requirements

  • Academic and teaching experience in accordance with the requirements for academic teaching staff positions established by the university's internal regulations and the legislation of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

  • In-depth understanding of the principles of organizing industrial safety and occupational health systems at hazardous production facilities, developing and implementing local regulatory documents and HSE procedures, with the ability to teach relevant disciplines at a current methodological level.
  • Expertise in hazard identification and risk assessment, planning and implementing risk reduction and management measures, and the ability to teach students the relevant analytical methods.
  • Knowledge of the regulatory requirements of the Republic of Kazakhstan in industrial safety, occupational health, and technosphere safety, sufficient for teaching and interacting with supervisory authorities for educational purposes.

Additional Competencies

  • Risk Assessment under international standards: proficiency in HAZOP, FMEA, Bow-Tie, LOPA, Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), and Event Tree Analysis (ETA) for risk assessment and management.
  • ISO 45001 and occupational health management systems: understanding of the structure and requirements of ISO 45001, experience in developing, implementing, and auditing occupational health management systems and integrating them with other standards.
  • Process Safety Management (PSM): knowledge of PSM principles under API RP 750 or similar international guidelines, experience applying process-oriented safety at industrial facilities.
  • Safety Analytics and Digital HSE: use of digital HSE platforms, IoT sensors, real-time monitoring, incident analytics, and predictive safety.
  • ESG and corporate safety: integrating ESG approaches into industrial safety, corporate risk management, sustainable development, and ESG reporting.
  • Industrial Cybersecurity: basic understanding of cybersecurity for industrial systems (OT/ICS), safety risks, and integrating digital HSE solutions with cybersecurity requirements.
  • International HSE certification: possession of a NEBOSH (International General Certificate or Diploma) or IOSH (Managing Safely / Certificate) certificate is a significant advantage; an ISO 45001 Lead Auditor certificate is also considered an advantage.

Selection process

The selection process includes an interview, a presentation of the teaching course, and a presentation of the planned research work.
