The Military Department was established in 1963 at the Dzhambul Hydromelioration and Construction Institute to train reserve officers in engineering specialties. Over the decades, it has become an important center for military and technical education in southern Kazakhstan. In 2024, following the restructuring of Taraz Regional University, the Military Department was transferred to the Kazakh National University of Water Management and Irrigation. Today, it remains the only military department in the Zhambyl region. Since its founding, more than 20,000 specialists have been trained for the Armed Forces and other security agencies of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Historical background Educational activities are the core function of the Military Department, focused on training reserve officers and sergeants. Instruction is conducted using the "military day" method, in accordance with approved academic programs that define the structure, academic and practical content of military training, and establish the optimal scope of theoretical knowledge and practical skills required for each military specialty.
Theoretical and practical classes are held using the department’s training and material base, as well as on the premises of military units of the "South" Regional Command stationed in the city of Taraz.
Each training day begins with the performance of the National Anthem of the Republic of Kazakhstan. According to the daily schedule, drill training hours include exercises in firearms handling, physical training, protection against weapons of mass destruction, and the study of general military regulations.
